After marrying a successful Parisian writer known commonly as "Willy" (Dominic West), Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette (Keira Knightley) is transplanted from her childhood home in rural France to the intellectual and artistic splendor of Paris. Soon after, Willy convinces Colette to ghostwrite for him. She pens a semi-autobiographical novel about a witty and brazen country girl named Claudine, sparking a bestseller and a cultural sensation. After its success, Colette and Willy become the talk of Paris and their adventures inspire additional Claudine novels. Colette's fight over creative ownership and gender roles drives her to overcome societal constraints, revolutionizing literature, fashion and sexual expression.

  • Top-notch filmmaking, fascinating story

This sumptuous period piece tracks the rise of a provocative writer in the early 20th century. But the film has surprising contemporary relevance in its exploration of marriage, identity, and the nature of celebrity culture. Keira Knightley and Dominic West are outstanding, and the director shows great sensitivity toward the material.

Gorgeous. However, I disregarded the reviews that said it was preachy--toward the end, it stalls, rubbing one's nose in this particular definition of liberation.
  • A depiction of the struggles of Artistry.

Truly an amazing piece of cinema. A or an insight into oppression. Who is the author or director of the film, where does one pull inspiration from. Trying to control what we write, movements and thoughts.

Although the feministic message was too much in your face instead of letting it be natural, the film is still deserving a loud applause. It might be Knightley's career performance. I found the film to have a unique blend between a raw, period piece and a graceful play. Thought it was well written, directed, acted, edited and music. Oscar worthy? Not sure about that, but at minimum, a really GOOD film!

Way ahead of her time. Beautiful period piece that took me back to late 19th century Paris. A City and culture that was waiting to burst with the power of female artists! Fantastique!

I love period pieces. Movies can take you anywhere, including back in time. I’d held off renting this movie. I didn’t think I’d like it and I love Keira Knightly. I was pleasantly surprised. The acting was superb. 👏

The movie feels more like a play, but an excellent one. Tremendous acting by Knightley and West which builds to a crescendo by the end of the film. Great sets, casting, pacing, history.
