One man's ruthless pursuit of justice plays out against the darkest chapter of Irish history in this riveting revenge thriller. In 1847, battle-hardened soldier Feeney (James Frecheville) deserts the British army to return home to Ireland, where he finds his country ravaged beyond recognition by the Great Famine. When he discovers that his mother has died of starvation and his brother has been hanged by the British, something snaps, sending Feeney on a relentless quest to get even with the powers-that-be who have wronged both his family and his country. There is only one man who can stop Feeney's bloody crusade: disgraced British army veteran Hannah (Hugo Weaving), whose own loyalties may be more complex than they appear…

  • Good, but not great

Scenery was great, revenge theme was compelling, but somehow I found it wanting. I don't know james frecheville, but he just couldn't come out of an inexplicable comatose sort of demeanor. I grew weary of his striking fear by simply standing in front of people and NOT saying anything. Also, Hugo Weaving's "turning" was not set up very well - just not convincing. Hugo was the highlight. Frecheville so-so and I would say the directing was below average in terms of bringing out emotion.

Very Deep. It gave us a glimpse of how horribly the Irish were treated and murdered by the British back then. Shows us a big reason why so many Irish immigrants to America

  • Irish Western about power

    By Irish Ghandi
This movie is on par with the 2007 remake of 3:10 to Yuma. Black 47 is essentially a western about the famine and political power in Ireland during the 1840's. But it is also about politics in the world today. There are many allusions in the movie about how the global political secne today is rooted in past mistakes. The main character, Feeny, is an Irish soldier who was fighting on behalf of the British in Afghanistan. This is relevant today because many Irish Americans are fighting on behalf of the imperialist US government today in Afghanistan. Feeny is haunted by the things he did in war on behalf of the British. He is clearly influenced by the Afghan people because when he comes back home to Ireland after the Afghan war, he has a beard, an Afghan cap, and carries an Afghan KuKri hook knife as a weapon. The British land laws destroy the Irish people causing millions to die. When I saw the movie in the theatre, the audience cheered when the Feeny chopped off the head of an evil land owner who caused Feeny's family to die. I am not condoning this behavior, but it is ironic how we cheer for the Irishman cutting heads off in revenge, but when a non-European cuts off a head we are disgusted. In 2014, the world was shocked when ISIS chopped the head off of the Irish American reporter James Foley. There are more people of Irish descent in the United States, then in Ireland because of the famine. We are all here because of the famine and this movie does justice to displaying the suffering caused by the famine. My father worked his way out of Irish poverty. He is too sick now to see this movie. But this film makes me proud to be Irish.

Hugo does a fantastic job but am unsure about James Frecheville in this role. I liked a couple of things (cinematography and atmosphere) but felt it wasn’t anything completely special. Wait until Netflix.
  • Really good time period vengeance justice movie

I quite enjoyed this movie as people struggled for who they are and what they stand for under the weight of a famine.
