When Ellen, the matriarch of the Graham family, passes away, her daughter's family begins to unravel cryptic and increasingly terrifying secrets about their ancestry. The more they discover, the more they find themselves trying to outrun the sinister fate they seem to have inherited. Making his feature debut, writer-director Ari Aster unleashes a nightmare vision of a domestic breakdown that exhibits the craft and precision of a nascent auteur, transforming a familial tragedy into something ominous and deeply disquieting, and pushing the horror movie into chilling new terrain with its shattering portrait of heritage gone to hell.

One of the most terrifying and moving horror movies I have ever seen.
  • They don't make them better

As good of a horror film to come out in forever. As good as The Witch, definitely scarier. Absolutely must be paying attention. Highly recommend watching more than once to understand the breadth of this film and the details that went into it. Highly recommended.
  • Very good film

    Not scary but good story
  • Not sure it was designed to be entertainment...

Very much so I’m not sure what those involved with the movie didn’t walk out. I would be ashamed of this work if I were one involved in its production.
  • Best Horror in a Long Time, Not for Everybody

I viewed this movie with high expectations, and was exceedingly rewarded. The movie was almost perfectly paced, well-produced, and didn’t rely on cheap jump scares. Although I thoroughly enjoyed viewing Hereditary(in retrospect, the movie itself is nerve-wracking), I can understand why others may not. With the exception of The Shining, I’m not a horror fan at all. But I understand that some horror fans are more interested in the thrill than the production quality(which is perfectly fine, it’s simply personal preference.) If you are looking for something that will deeply disturb the longer it resonates and sits in, Hereditary is for you. If you’re more of a thrill viewer, perhaps consider another choice. Or not, because you don’t have to be familiar with something to enjoy it.

This is one of the worst horror movie that i've seen in my life so I don't know why a lot of people are giving this movie five stars. Really don't waste your money cause this is horrible, a complete disaster.
  • It was ok....nothing to brag about

Another typical paranormal-apparition type film that was just ok...reminded me of the Adams family but they tried to make it scary 😂
  • Scary, but also a downer

There are no light-hearted moments in this film. Ari Aster paints modern day life as dark and dreadful, particularly from the view of the teenager Peter. I enjoyed the movie - it was disturbing and scary.
  • F**king Outstanding

This is quite possibly one of the most unsettling experiences I've ever had in a movie theater before. Where Hereditary shines is in it's tone and atmosphere. Walking into this movie is like walking into a true nightmare. There aren't any big fantasy-like set pieces or even a gothic house, but it takes the kind of household you might see from an upper class family and make it feel so uncomfortable and unfamiliar that moving forward is like taking a deep breath. It all relies beautifully on the story, which I cannot spoil, but adjusts to the overall mood. I found myself shaking in my seat and taking deep breaths throughout the film. I promise you, you will not be disappointed. A family drama that takes disturbing turns and grabs you by the throat. Honestly, the best horror film I've seen in a long time. The only thing I hate, is that I don't get to see it for the first time again.
